I was watching The Departed (2006, Scorsese), and one after the other, the greatest actors kept appearing on my screen: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, etc.

As you can see, the cast was phenomenal. And the script? Amazing.

Martin Scorsese needs no introduction—his name speaks for itself.

Even though the script was brilliant, I think some parts would be considered appropriate for today’s cultural climate.

But what really struck me wasn’t something specific to The Departed—it was something I’ve noticed with all the great films I’ve watched in the past.

Throughout the movie, a question kept circling in my mind: Who are the great Hollywood actors of my generation? Who is the Angelina Jolie of our time ?

I can easily list iconic movie stars I know and admire—George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Christian Bale, and so on.

But if you think about it, they’re not exactly Millennials. They’re actually closer to retirement than rising stardom.

Which brings up the question: is it a lack of talent? Or is it a lack of great scripts and opportunities that’s preventing new stars from reaching the heights their predecessors did?

Of course, there are still good actors working today—though no one comes to mind immediately.

There are still some great films being made. One of the most recent examples is Oppenheimer, by the brilliant Christopher Nolan (one of my favorite directors in Hollywood).

But most new releases feel underwhelming. The proof? I couldn’t name a single great movie star from my own generation. Meanwhile, I could talk about Meryl Streep all day.

Maybe it’s me. Maybe I need to dig deeper.

In the meantime, I drown myself in K-dramas/Movies and nostalgia, rewatching old classics.

And sometimes—just sometimes—I do give new movies a chance, hoping not to be disappointed.

As a cinephile, it’s a pretty sad predicament.

What about you? Do you have any great new Hollywood stars that you truly admire?

Leave a comment below if you do.

Until next time.💕
